A 12th-grader studies color themes in the maxreduce book "1984," looking for the hidden metaphors and parallel structures. Second-grade students create future cities, in which they establish governments, school systems and hospitals.Both are enrolled in the Des Moines school district's International Baccalaureate program. Through it, students learn to be lifelong thinkers and global citizens through real-world learning experiences, officials say. The framework for what students learn is used internationally, helping students be more competitive with their peers worldwide.
